How to confirm the tension of the chainsaw chain when installing it?

When installing a chainsaw chain, it is critical to ensure that the chain is properly tensioned. A chain that is too tight can strain the motor, cause the unit to overheat, or even damage the chain, while a chain that is too loose can easily fall off during operation or produce uneven cutting results. Here are the steps to confirm and adjust the tension of the chain saw chain:

First, make sure the chain saw is off and disconnected from the power source or remove the battery to prevent accidental starting.

Follow the instructions in the chain saw manual to properly install the chain and guide bar. The sharp teeth of the chain should point to the front of the chain saw.

After installing the chain, gently pull each section of the chain to see if the chain runs smoothly on the guide bar.

The chain should now be in close contact with the guide bar, but it should not be too tight or too loose.

Manual check: Use your fingers to try to push the chain. The ideal tension is that the chain should be able to move slightly down or up about 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) when you pull lightly with your fingers in the middle of the chain. If the chain is too loose, excessive free movement may cause the chain to fall off; if it is too tight, it will not move easily, indicating that the chain is too tight.
Clearance under the guide bar: Check the gap between the chain and the guide bar. Generally, the chain should fit evenly on the surface of the guide bar, but still bend slightly to prevent the chain from fully contacting the guide bar.

Adjustment screw: Most chain saws are equipped with a tension adjustment device, usually adjusted by a tension screw. Turning the adjustment screw clockwise will make the chain tighter, and turning it counterclockwise will loosen the chain.
When adjusting, make sure that the chain can turn freely and has appropriate slack after tensioning.

After the adjustment is completed, pull the chain manually and check its tension. Make sure the tension is appropriate and the chain is neither loose nor too tight.
Start the chain saw and run it for a few seconds to observe whether the chain runs smoothly and whether there is any abnormal noise or jumping. If the chain is still abnormal, it may need to be readjusted.

Check the tension of the chain regularly after each use, especially after long-term use. Because the chain may loosen due to temperature changes or wear during the cutting process.
If the chain is loose or deformed, it should be adjusted or replaced in time.

Correct tension is essential for the safety and efficiency of the chain saw. When installing the chain, make sure it is moderately tensioned, that is, the chain can move slightly, but it should not be loose, nor should it be too tight. By properly adjusting the tensioning screw, regular inspection and maintenance, you can effectively improve the performance of the chain saw and extend its service life.
